Request for Information (RFI)

Revised 10/30/23 to change the scope summary below.

Revised 11/1/23 to change estimated quantity and clarify what is a bundle.

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC (SRNS), which manages and operates portions of the Savannah River Site (SRS) under a Department of Energy (DOE) prime contract, solicits expressions of interest from potential suppliers with a background in fabrication of approximate 4-inch Bundles/Aluminum tubes with lids.

This RFI is issued to assist with finding potential suppliers interested in this solicitation.

The SRS is located approximately 15 miles south of Aiken, South Carolina and is 310 contiguous square miles.

Scope Summary: Provide labor, materials, welding, and services required for the fabrication, inspection, documentation, and delivery for the following:

4.13-inch square bundle tubes, length 136.68-inches, and lid – estimated quantity 30.

4.61-inch square bundle tubes, length 136.80-inches, and lid – estimated quantity 20.

4.00-inch round bundle tubes, length 136.69-inches, and lid – estimated quantity 80.

What is a bundle:

It is a custom extruded tube (square or round) with a plate welded across one end with a custom cone shape welded on top of the plate; additionally, a custom lid will be fabricated, which will be inserted on the other end to close the extruded tube.

All of that together is a bundle.

These bundle design consist of a bundle, bottom plate, and cone:

  1. Each of the three bundles are extruded Aluminum 6061-T6 per ASTM B221 (NOT rolled and seam welded). Each of the three extrusion dies are purchased by the supplier and added to the estimated cost. Each of the three bundles have various cutouts for engagement with the lid.

  2. Each of the bottom plates are ¼ inch Aluminum 6061-T6 Plate per ASTM B209 and bevel welded to the extruded bundle. The bottom plates have drilled holes and a chamfer for the bevel weld.

  3. Each of the bottom cones are made from 16 GA Aluminum 6061-T6 Plate per ASTM B209. The cone is rolled/bent and seam welded to shape with drilled holes. The cone is then fillet welded to the extruded bundle below the bottom plate.

The bundle lids consist of a ring, base plate, locking rod/s, and bail:

  1. The 4” round bundle lid ring is extruded Aluminum 6061-T6 per ASTM B221 (NOT rolled and seam welded). The extrusion die is purchased by the supplier and added to the estimated cost. The 4.13” square bundle lid ring is made from 3.5-inch diameter SCH-40 Aluminum 6061-T6 pipe per ASTM 8429. The 4.61” square tube lid ring is made from a modified diameter SCH-40 Aluminum 6061-T6 pipe per ASTM 8429. Each of the three bundle lid rings have various cutouts and drilled holes for engagement with the bundle and locking rod.

  2. Each of the base plates are made from ¼ inch Aluminum 6061-T6 Plate per ASTM B209 and fillet welded to the lid ring. The base plates have drilled holes. The square bundle base plates have a thread hole and 1/2-13 UNC .75 inch long Hex Acorn head bolt.

  3. Each of the locking rods are made from Aluminum 6061-T6 rod per ASTM B221. The locking rods are welded (round=bevel, squares=fillet) to the lid ring.

  4. Each of the bails are made from Aluminum 6061-T6 rod per ASTM B221. The bails are welded to the base plate for handling.

A gauge will be provided to the supplier for each bundle size, to ensure the internal measurement is met.

A supplier's response to the RFI does not guarantee they will be selected to participate in the Request for Proposal (RFP).

Suppliers responding to this RFI shall include evidence of the following:

  1. Supplier capability statement/personnel qualifications

  2. Standard lead time for fabrication

  3. Past performance relative to subject scope

  4. Budgetary estimated cost

  5. Quality Assurance Manual (Uncontrolled Copy)

  6. Qualification for codes and standards

  7. Certified Material Test Reports are supplied by Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories.

E-mail response addressing Items 1 through 7 above shall be submitted by 5:00 p.m. est. on 11/16/23 to Barbara McCarty at barbara.mccarty@srs.gov.
